On Sunday, March
7th, Ancaster Branch Manager Barbara Gardiner attended the second annual Cup of
Tea event held by the Zonta Club of Hamilton II to raise awareness of native women’s
issues – in particular the issue of violence against native women – as part of International
Women’s Day activities taking place around the world.
Founded in 1919, Zonta International is a global organization of executives and
professionals working together to advance the status of women through service and
advocacy. Zonta members volunteer their time, talents and money to local and international
service projects, as well as scholarship and award programs aimed at furthering
women's education, leadership and youth development. Locally, the club supports
many organizations which enhance the status of women.
Women from the Native Women’s Centre participated by preparing the food, sharing
information and providing entertainment from the aboriginal culture.
As part of the festivities, the 230 guests were served three cups of tea in traditional
style: a pureed strawberry cold tea for health and good luck, a cedar tea to bring
cleansing and clarity, and a green tea ice cream that brought a sweet end to the
day. Participants also enjoyed a traditional lunch, complete with dense scones and
two kinds of soup.
