Our Good Neighbour Program commitment to building a strong local economy

Our roots stretch back more than 60 years, when working people, farmers, and small business people created a credit union to get the financial services they needed.

Ever since, our business practices have reflected our cooperative values, our corporate commitment to social responsibility, and our desire to make an economic contribution to our communities.

Our Members’ money stays in community.

As a credit union founded on cooperative principles, we reinvest our Members’ money in the communities we serve. It is used to provide people with mortgages and loans to help them raise their families, educate their children and realize their dreams.

Our branch managers make the decisions.

We believe that our branch managers, who live and work in our communities, are in the best position to make decisions about loans and mortgages. The ability of our Members to get the credit they need doesn’t depend on an impersonal computer in a distant city.

And if someone doesn’t qualify for a loan or a mortgage, we work with our Members to get them into a position where they can.

We provide direct employment for more than 1,000 people.

More than 1,000 people at our 44 branches, eight Commercial Business Centres and two corporate offices have secure jobs with competitive salaries, living and spending in Meridian communities.

More than 45,000 people are employed by Meridian’s commercial Members.

We provide financial services to more than 10,000 businesses of all sizes, employing more than 45,000 people in Meridian communities. Even during the depths of the recent recession, we made sure that our commercial Members got the credit they needed to survive and continue to provide employment opportunities in our communities.

We provide advice and support to local business groups.

Managers at our branches and corporate business centres volunteer to work with various local business groups to provide them with advice and assistance on everything from developing a business plan to networking and sales.
