Small business initiatives and assistance for low-income seniors welcomed by Meridian
TORONTO (March 22, 2011) – Meridian, Ontario’s largest credit union, welcomed a number of the budget initiatives outlined this afternoon by Finance Minister Jim Flaherty in the Federal budget.
“The recession has had a significant impact on a number of our Members and the communities we serve,” Sean Jackson, President and CEO, Meridian, said. “I believe a number of the measures and initiatives outlined in today’s budget will have a positive impact.”
In particular, Jackson said the energy retrofit program, which will provide additional funding to help people upgrade their homes and make them more energy efficient and the Guaranteed Income Supplement for low-income seniors will be helpful to Meridian Members.
As well, Jackson said some of the new business tax and depreciation provisions in the budget will help the manufacturing base in some Meridian communities recover.
“We welcome further tax relief outlined in the 2011-12 Budget to allow for investment in the manufacturing and processing sector,” Jackson said.
