October 2, 2008Meridian Credit Union Amongst Canada's Top 100 Employers

St. Catharines – Meridian Credit Union has been named one of Canada's Top 100 Employers by Macleans Magazine, announced Sean Jackson, President and CEO of Meridian Credit Union.

"Meridian is delighted to be recognized as one of Canada's Top 100 Employers," said Jackson. "This prestigious award is particularly meaningful because it is a reflection of the great employees we have at Meridian and their ongoing commitment to re-inventing neighbourhood banking."

The award, noted Jackson, underscores Meridian's biggest asset: its employees.

"Meridian employees have helped make Meridian the organization it is today. We have some of the brightest, most compassionate and innovative people working at Meridian who, each and everyday, help grow our reputation through their work with Members and their commitment to their communities," said Jackson.

Now entering its 9th year, Canada's Top 100 Employers is an annual competition that recognizes Canada's best places to work by identifying companies and organizations that lead their industry in attracting and retaining employees.

"Meridian sets itself apart from other financial institutions because it truly thinks outside of the box," said Jackson. "We remain committed to people, not just numbers and are invested in seeing our communities grow and become better."

Since its inception in 2005, Meridian has introduced a number of employee-driven initiatives, including:

  • Offering full-time employees three annual days of paid leave to be used for their wellness, personal growth and development.
  • Implementing robust employee recognition and engagement programs that are based on Meridian's unique values of Passion for People, Do The Right Thing, Get The Job Done, Dare To Be Different and Lead!
  • Implementing the Good Neighbour Program — Meridian's charitable giving program that is committed to investing four per cent of Meridian's pre-tax earnings into its local communities where Members and employees live and work. This is four times the national average for corporate giving.

These initiatives, noted Tom Wise, Senior Vice President and Chief of Staff, Meridian Credit Union, help employees excel in both their professional and personal lives.

"Our employees see themselves and Meridian as a positive force in making their communities stronger, vibrant and more inclusive. This outlook provides an immense amount of job satisfaction," said Wise.

Meridian's approach to banking is also a key distinguisher from other financial institutions for current and potential employees.

As part of its vision of reinventing neighbourhood banking, Meridian enables local branches and branch managers to make decisions on loans and mortgages in the branch using their knowledge of the individual and local economy.

"Our employees are able to make decisions that can make a difference in the lives of real people in their communities. This level of trust and decision-making ability given to Meridian employees helps us to attract and retain the best and the brightest," said Wise.
