Maintaining forests for the future

Kathi Shropshire gets really frustrated when she sees garbage in the forest, “we really need to educate our children and grandchildren about the importance of not just recycling, but preserving our environment,” she says. “Without a clean, safe and green place to call home, not much else really matters.”

This is the reason that Kathi and her Orillia branch team are active supporters of the Couchiching Conservancy, a non-profit, non-government organization dedicated to holding natural lands in trust for future generations to enjoy.

A passion for the environment

Kathi firmly believes that if you’re going to get involved in a community organization, it should be something you’re really passionate about.

“You spend time after work, in the evening and on weekends taking part in something; it should be something you’re really passionate about. I encourage my entire team to find causes that matter to them personally.”

So when Wendy Timpano, Executive Director of the Community Foundation of Orillia and Area approached Kathi for a unique sponsorship opportunity for the Conservancy, she jumped on board!

Caring about the future of our community

Since 1993, the Couchiching Conservancy has helped protect more than 9,000 acres of special natural lands in and around Orillia, and now they need the funds to help them maintain and preserve these forests and wet lands for future generations leaving lasting, natural legacies.

“I’m always looking for meaningful environmental organizations to support through our CSR program, the Good Neighbour Program,” says Kathi, “organizations that care about the community, the children and the future.”

That’s why her branch made a donation of $5,000 towards the Couchiching Conservancy’s goal of $40,000 for the preservation of the lands they have acquired.

Better Together

"Meridian's donation is a huge boost for our project.  Not only is it going to help us reach our goal, it signals to the local business community the value of our cause.  We're thrilled with the contribution,” says Mark Bisset, Executive Director of the Couchiching Conservancy.

“The Couchiching Conservancy stewards lands and The Community Foundation of Orillia and Area stewards funds,” adds Wendy, “Through these combined efforts, both organizations support the needs of our communities for all future generations.  Working together, and with the generous support of Meridian Credit Union, we are closer to meeting the land conservation needs of our community.”
