A penny saved was worth much more than a penny earned in the Niagara Region this spring.
Pennies and a lot of other loose change added up to give the Niagara Peninsula Children’s Centre a $161,000 boost as part of the region-wide Astral Media Have A Heart Niagara Kids fundraising drive sponsored by Meridian. The Centre provides rehabilitation and support services to 3,000 children and teens in Niagara with physical and communication disabilities and special needs.
“We have always been a strong supporter of the Centre. So we were delighted at the opportunity to become the title sponsor for this fundraising drive,” Sean Jackson, Meridian President and CEO, said.
As title sponsor, Meridian donated $10,000 and employees at all 18 of its Niagara branches volunteered to count and wrap coins that came in as part of the month-long fundraising effort.
Sacks of coins rolled in. Calling themselves the Change Crusaders, community volunteers collected loose change from colleagues, friends and family at work, schools, churches and home.
As well, five Meridian employees volunteered to staff the phones for part of the day-long fund-raising radiothon hosted by Astral Media, which owns three radio stations in Niagara – ezrock 105.7, Newstalk 610 CKTB, and HTZ-FM.
“It was a tremendously successful fundraising campaign and a perfect fit with our Corporate Social Responsibility Program – the Good Neighbour Program. The program focuses on building strong, vibrant, inclusive communities. This is a great example of that philosophy at work, bringing people together to support of an organization that makes the entire community stronger,” Jackson said.
