Local cancer care charity Wellspring Niagara operates rent-free in space from Meridian
Stevensville is a place where everyone pretty much knows each other.
Located a few minutes drive from Fort Erie in Niagara, Stevensville is a small and friendly – a town where people lend a helping hand when they can.
And that’s what Meridian Credit Union branch manager Frank Hannaway did.
A helping hand
When a storefront location became available in 2007 in the branch plaza that Meridian owns in Stevensville, Frank offered it to Wellspring Niagara.
“We wanted to find a way to make this community strong and vibrant. One of the best ways that I could think of was to offer the space to Wellspring Niagara,” Hannaway said.
Wellspring Niagara has been working with people living with cancer as well as friends and family members of those that are across the Niagara Region since 1992. However, until Frank’s offer of free space, it didn’t have a local presence in the Stevensville area.
Now, it does, thanks to Meridian and Frank.
Providing space for those that need it
“It is no secret that Meridian Credit Union has defined themselves as one of Niagara’s community leaders, committed to giving back and helping to make Niagara stronger and more vibrant,” Ann Mantini-Celima, Executive Director of the Wellspring Niagara Cancer Support Foundation, said.
“Wellspring Niagara Cancer Support Foundation is one of many local organizations that has benefited from their generous support,” she said.
Wellspring is a national organization with centres in communities across the country. All of their programs are provided free of charge. The organization receives no government funding and all of their programs are made possible through donations alone.
“Wellspring Niagara does so much for the community that we all live in. We are so happy that we can help in this small way to aid the organization,” Frank said.
“Not only do they give back to us financially but they have donated space in Stevensville, making it possible for Wellspring Niagara to offer satellite programs to the residents of Fort Erie. We are also proud to have several retired and active Meridian Credit Union staff dedicating their time and talents to the organization. Through their generous support, we have been able to continue with our mission of providing free emotional, psychological and social support to hundreds of families in Niagara who are affected by cancer every day. Thank you Meridian Credit Union!”
