Bill Maurin, CA, CPA, ICD.D
President and CEO

Bill Maurin was appointed Meridian’s President and Chief Executive Officer in 2014. Under his leadership, Meridian has grown its assets under management from $10 billion to $24.4 billion (effective March 31, 2020), expanded its digital banking offering and increased its branch footprint by almost 50 per cent.

Bill leads an Executive Leadership Team focused on implementing Meridian’s strategic vision of delivering Meridian’s unique brand of co-operative banking with a strong emphasis on providing quality service and innovative financial solutions while strengthening the communities it serves.

With more than 30 years of experience in the financial services industry, Bill began his career at KPMG Chartered Accountants and then at The CUMIS Group as National Manager, Finance and subsequently as Director, Finance and Accounting.

In 2002, he joined Niagara Credit Union as the Senior Finance Manager. Following Meridian’s legacy merger between Niagara Credit Union and HEPCOE Credit Union in 2005, Bill became Meridian’s Vice President of Finance and later Meridian’s Senior Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer in 2008.

Since joining Meridian, Bill has built a solid reputation of enabling business growth while protecting the balance sheet and ensuring that risk management is top of mind in all key strategic decisions. Bill played a key role in Meridian’s amalgamation with Desjardins Credit Union in 2011 and Meridian’s acquisition of Roynat Lease Finance in 2016, which created Meridian OneCap Credit Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Meridian. Bill also spearheaded the creation and development of Meridian’s new subsidiary, motusbank, a full service national digital retail bank, launched in 2019. Bill is currently President and CEO of motusbank.

Bill received his CA designation in 1991 and graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Commerce degree from McMaster University in 1988.

Bill currently sits on the Meridian OneCap Credit Corporation (Board Chair) and motusbank (non-independent member). He also serves as a member of the Board of Trustees for Brock University.

He has served as Board Chair of the Canadian Credit Union Association and as member of the Board of Directors for CUMIS Group, CUCO Cooperative Association, Central 1 and for the United Way of St. Catharines. He currently resides in Mississauga.

Tara Daniel, CPA, CA

Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

As Chief Financial Officer of Meridian, Tara provides overall leadership and direction for all of Meridian Credit Union’s financial operations. The CFO is a critical executive role as Meridian delivers on its aggressive five-year Blueprint for Growth strategy, and is responsible for optimizing financial performance within the current business model and ensuring strong financial stewardship is in place. She also is responsible for the Human Resources Operations and Performance Rewards business unit to support the delivery of our Exceptional Employee Experience Promise.

Tara is a senior finance leader with a proven track record of developing and executing strategy, leading change, and empowering teams through collaboration to achieve optimal business results.

Tara has been a leader in the financial services industry for over 15 years, starting with Meridian in 2003 in the role of Assistant Controller and progressing through a number of dynamic and challenging leadership roles across the broad spectrum of the finance team. In 2012, Tara joined the Senior Leadership Team in the role of Vice President of Treasury & Performance Measurement and in 2017, Tara concurrently assumed the Chief Financial Officer role of Meridian’s digital bank with a focus on shepherding the application process with the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions.

Tara has an Honours Bachelor of Accounting degree from Brock University and obtained her CPA CA professional accountancy designation in 2000. She was previously employed with KPMG and St. Catharines Hydro prior to joining Meridian. Tara is a passionate supporter of the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the United Way and many of the youth associations in which her two children participate.

Gary Genik

Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer

Gary is a results-oriented corporate leader with 30 years of experience in leading Operations and Technology groups in the financial services sector. Specialized in shaping long-term business strategies and motivating high-performing teams to deliver on plans, he is a strong collaborator and works in partnership with others to develop solutions for business issues and trends. Gary brings valuable executive experience, expertise and understanding of Meridian to the role of SVP & Chief Operating Officer.

Gary joined Meridian in 2008 and quickly demonstrated his business acumen and learning agility as he established a set of foundational programs required to transition our IT team into a high performing, high-spirited organization delivering robust, cost effective solutions in support of Meridian’s ambitious business plans. He went on to integrate a variety of different teams under his leadership including Operations, Technology, Corporate Real Estate & Procurement, Wealth Management, Enterprise Project Management Office, Credit Card and Contact Centre while delivering on significant enterprise strategies including Meridian’s business transformation, technology, wealth and payments strategies.

Prior to joining Meridian, Gary’s past experiences included 20 years with CIBC and INTRIA-HP. As Director of INTRIA-HP Systems Operations he had accountability for managing CIBC’s Data Centre and Network Services and 5,000 ABMs across Canada. Gary was also SVP and Chief Information Officer at the Canadian Depository for Securities, Canada’s primary custodian and clearing house for Canadian money markets, bond and equity trading. As a consultant, Gary worked with INTRIA, MTS Allstream, IBM Canada, and First Ontario Credit Union.

Gary currently holds a seat on the Board of Directors for motusbank.

David Moore

Chief Marketing Officer and Senior Vice President Retail Banking

David has single accountability for brand marketing, product development, service delivery, Member Wellbeing and analytics across Meridian and motusbank, further advancing our overall digital banking experience and capabilities across the organization.

As Chief Marketing Officer and SVP Retail Banking, David oversees Meridian’s integrated marketing strategy, brand management, Member and market research, growth strategies, marketing communications, and product service development and management. For Retail Banking, David oversees Meridian’s branch network, mobile advisors, broker network, the Meridian digital channel and Member Wellbeing.

Since joining Meridian in 2006, David has created value across a variety of functions and key growth areas at Meridian and has held various senior roles within Finance, Enterprise Strategy, and Marketing. An engaged leader, David has leveraged this strong business acumen to help identify and implement marketing initiatives to grow business through an improved Member experience resulting in greater retention. A collaborative and engaging leader, David coaches his team to be results-oriented, innovative and accountable while empowering them to create, implement and deliver.

David is currently Chief Operating Officer of motusbank.

Prior to joining Meridian, David held several senior roles at CIBC and managed engaged teams with a proven track record of garnering results. David has a Master of Business Administration from the University of Wilfrid Laurier. A lifelong learner, David has acquired marketing accreditations from Cornell University and the Digital Marketing Institute.

A strong champion of the Ontario credit union system David has served as a board member on the Credit Union Managers Association for 9 years and is a member of the Ficanex Technology Advisory Committee. David is actively involved as a coach in youth basketball within the Hamilton community where he resides with his wife and three boys.

Sunny Sodhi

Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy and Corporate Affairs Officer

As Chief Strategy and Corporate Affairs Officer, Sunny Sodhi is responsible for overseeing the following functions within Meridian: Enterprise Strategy and Corporate Development, Innovation, Legal, Corporate Governance, and Government Relations. This includes overseeing Meridian's strategy to expand into new lines of business and markets, and to incorporate innovation into its overall corporate strategy. Sunny has previously also overseen Meridian's Corporate Communications function.

Sunny brings deep and extensive knowledge of the financial services sector to Meridian. Prior to joining Meridian, he focused his legal practice on advising domestic and international banks and insurance companies on a broad array of complex corporate and regulatory matters.  He has been recognized repeatedly by top international legal rankings, including Chambers and Partners, as a leading lawyer in Canada for corporate/M&A and banking. Sunny advised on transactions involving over 40 countries, and the purchase, sale or transfer of over $100 billion in assets.  He has been involved in some of the largest and most notable banking sector transactions in Canada, and has advised on the establishment and growth of numerous banks and insurance companies in Canada. He has assisted such entities closely with the development and execution of multi-year business plans, operations, organic and inorganic growth initiatives, corporate governance, capital raising, compliance and building strong relationships with regulators.

Prior to joining Meridian in 2014, Sunny practiced law in Toronto with Torys LLP and then Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP as a partner.  He also worked abroad with top international law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP in its Singapore office, focusing on cross-border mergers and acquisitions.

As a very strategic, collaborative, and solutions-oriented professional, Sunny’s leadership will help Meridian continue to execute on its growth strategy in an innovative manner that ensures adherence to evolving and increasingly complex financial sector regulation.

Sunny has been involved in establishing several not-for-profit and charitable organizations, and he is devoted to numerous community initiatives. He is also a member of the Boards for motusbank, OneCap Credit Corporation and Central 1 Credit Union.

Sunny graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours), and from the University of Victoria with a Juris Doctor.  He has been a member of the Bar in Ontario and New York since 2003.

Wade Stayzer, MBA

Chief People and Culture Officer and Senior Vice President Business Banking

With more than 20 years of financial services experience, Wade Stayzer is Meridian’s Chief People and Culture Officer and Senior Vice President Business Banking. He is responsible for the Human Resources Business Partner team, Talent Acquisition, Learning and Development, Internal Net Promotor and Corporate Communications. Wade also leads Meridian’s Business Banking network and Member Relations.  

Since 2005, Wade has been instrumental in shaping Meridian’s retail delivery strategy while establishing a culture of employee engagement. Over his tenure at Meridian, Wade managed key lines of business including Small Business, Retail and Wealth. He has also led various strategic initiatives including the branch and banking system integration of Meridian’s legacy Niagara/Guelph Wellington and Desjardins Credit Union mergers.

A long-time supporter and champion of the Ontario credit union system, Wade has held a variety of roles and responsibilities at Niagara Credit Union – one of Meridian’s legacy credit unions.

In 2010, Wade was recognized as one of Niagara’s Top 40 under 40 for outstanding business achievement and community leadership. That same year, he was also recognized by the St. Catharines Chamber of Commerce as the Young Professional of the Year.

A tireless community advocate, Wade is currently a Governor at Niagara College, a member of the Rotary Club of St. Catharines, and a proud member of the 2021 Canada Games Host Society for the Niagara Region.

Wade received his MBA from McMaster University and currently resides in Niagara.

John Trivieri

Chief Risk Officer

As Meridian’s Chief Risk Officer, John is accountable for Meridian’s overall Enterprise Risk Management strategy in all core risk categories, including strategic, credit, market, liquidity, operational, compliance, and Member risk. The scope of the role includes oversight of retail, commercial and special credit, privacy, compliance, anti-money laundering, enterprise risk management, fraud, corporate insurance and corporate security.

John served as Vice President, Risk at Meridian from 2014 to 2020 and has a proven track record of building strong risk management tools and processes. Under his leadership Meridian’s credit policy and risk management frameworks expanded tremendously to support the strong growth in loan portfolio size and complexity that Meridian has experienced over recent years. John played a simultaneous role in helping Meridian achieve record levels of credit recoveries on past impaired loans. Prior to this position, he served as Director, Commercial Credit at Meridian and was responsible to assist in the overall management and administration for the Commercial Loan team within the framework of the approved credit management policies as set up by the Board.

John’s career trajectory has established him as a highly accomplished Finance Executive, with excellence in reducing costs, increasing efficiency, and stimulating bottom line growth for midsize and multimillion-dollar organizations.

He began his financial services career at Bank of Nova Scotia from 1993 – 2002 working in sales where he managed both retail and commercial banking operations before being quickly accelerated for executive training as Vice President.

John joined NuComm International, headquartered in St. Catharines where he served from 2002 – 2004 as Vice President of Finance and Business Development before becoming President (2004 – 2007). As President of the largest privately held Canadian provider of Customer Relationship and Contact Centre Services with over 4,000 employees and 15 offices, John was instrumental in growing NuComm’s revenues and improving cash flow.

Following NuComm, John took the position of Senior Vice President, Finance for Fallsview Group (2008 – 2012), based in Niagara Falls, leading the structuring, negotiating and origination of all new debt facilities for all new and existing acquisitions and developments.

As President of Trivieri Consulting Services, launched in 2012, John provided guidance and assistance to clients in developing proper financial models and reporting systems to present to their financial partners.

In his capacity as Vice President of Trivieri Investments Ltd., established in 1980, John also manages a real estate portfolio consisting of residential, commercial, professional and industrial developments.

A passionate advocate for entrepreneurs and start ups, John is one of the original members of the Niagara Venture Forum and Niagara Angell Network. He is also an active volunteer in the Niagara community, and is Co-Chair of the Trivieri Family & Friends Heart & Stroke Annual Golf Tournament and serves as Chair of Hospice Niagara. He also has volunteered as a coach for St. Catharines CYO basketball and assists annually at the Ontario Classic Senior High School Basketball Tournament.
