Your Information: It Matters to Meridian!
You may have heard of the recent data breach at Equifax. As data breaches continue to negatively impact more and more Canadians, the significance of protecting your information has never been more important.
A limited number of Canadians are among the 143 million people affected in the Equifax data breach. Equifax has set up a contact center (1-866-447-7559) and is providing on-going updates through the following link - https://www.equifaxsecurity2017.com/consumer-notice/.
Scammers will attempt to capitalize on the Equifax data breach by designing phishing emails that will play on a potential victim's fears of being amongst the people affected by this breach.
The success of the scammers will depend on how well people can identify these illegitimate emails as fraudulent phishing attacks. Sometimes that can be difficult because the scammers use legitimate logos, content and material from an organization's website. Scammers will also spoof the email, so that it looks like it is being sent by a reliable source.
Remember that Equifax has set up a website to help identify if your personal information was affected by the data breach, so if you didn't initiate the communication, Equifax should not be emailing you. To avoid being scammed, don't respond to any potential phishing emails, don't click on any links in the body of phishing emails and don't open any attachments.
If you ever receive a suspicious email and you’re not sure if it is phishing, please contact: onlinebankingsecurity@meridiancu.ca.
