Creating Positive Change


As I go about some of my personal trips to stores and take note of masks, line-ups, disinfected shopping carts, gloves and so on, I have to remind myself that this is all real.  It sometimes feels like a science fiction movie when you are out in this environment.  The one point of comfort however is that like a science fiction movie, this too shall end.  It may take longer than any of us expect but it will end. 
When I apply that same thinking to the events of the last couple of weeks, the reflections are vastly more disturbing and perplexing.  Here we are in this ‘modern day world’ with so much advancement through all lenses, yet, we still have disturbing and incomprehensible issues with systemic racism.  Unlike the pandemic, the history of this societal issue spans centuries, not months and its endpoint is less clear.
It’s critical that organizations like ours continue to stand in support of the complex and critical issues around systemic racism. This has to end.
Vital and hopeful conversations are taking place at all levels. On the one hand, it is sad that we are still on this journey; on the other hand, it is inspiring to see the ground swell of support for change.
I know these events are consuming the thoughts of our employees and Members alike. These issues are very real and must be remedied.  Meridian stands behind all those working to effect positive change for the betterment of all. We want to be part of the solution.

Based on what our employees tell us, we are making good progress but we also acknowledge we are not perfect and there is more we want to do. We’re listening, and we pledge to continue marching forward toward full inclusiveness and diversity in our workplace and in our communities − and for all Canadians.
We recognize that we have a collective responsibility to create a welcoming and supportive environment for everyone that reflects and acknowledges the diverse communities we serve. Thank you for your support as the Members and customers we serve.
Moving forward requires commitment, empathy and understanding. We know we are working towards achieving a better workplace and world.  Let’s continue the journey together.
