  • What is Meridian doing about COVID-19 to help keep employees & Members safe?

We are monitoring the situation closely and following guidelines from government and public health authorities. As the situation evolves, we are making decisions about reducing branch hours, limiting access, and closing branch locations if necessary.

Keep checking this page for the latest information. We thank you for your patience as we work together though this difficult situation.

  • How are branches and ABMs being cleaned?

Questions about mortgage payments

  • Why is Meridian raising mortgage rates when the Bank of Canada just decreased rates?

During this extremely volatile rate environment governments and financial institutions around the world, including the Bank of Canada, are working to find a balance that will allow for sustainability. When the Bank of Canada’s rates fluctuate, so do the rates of all financial institutions, including Meridian. When we adjust mortgage rates, we do so in response to the overall rate environment, in the collective effort to achieve stability.

We always monitor the rate environment very closely, and we have increased these efforts to ensure that we’re responding appropriately to changes. We are also examining our other financial products, looking for favourable changes we can make to help our Members during this time.

We remain competitive and focused on the financial well-being of our Members and community.

    Fixed-rate mortgages
If you have a fixed-rate mortgage with Meridian, you will continue to get the rate you received when you signed up, for the length of your mortgage term.

    Variable-rate mortgages
If you have a variable-rate mortgage with Meridian, your rate will change in response to changes we make to our variable mortgage rate.

As always, changes to our posted mortgage rates only apply to new mortgage applications and renewals including refinancing. If you have any questions, please get in touch with us.

  • Should I skip a mortgage payment?

This option is available to you; however, if you can make your current mortgage payment, you should. Paying off your debt is always going to be better for your finances overall. Our skip-a-payment feature is intended to help you if you are incapable of making a payment due to financial difficulties arising from a crisis or emergency.

  • What’s the financial impact of skipping a payment?

When you request to skip a payment you are deferring payment, not subtracting it from the total you owe. Instead, you make an additional payment later, so your amortization period increases. This includes any property taxes that may be included in your payment.

  • Do I qualify to skip a mortgage payment?

If you have a mortgage with Meridian, and you have made at least one payment, you are eligible to take advantage of our skip-a-payment feature. This includes mortgages on rental properties.

Interest-only construction mortgages are not eligible for the skip-a-payment-feature.

  • How do I request to skip a payment?

To request to skip a payment, call 1-833-754-0045 (Open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday). We have several options available so that you can authorize the request without visiting a branch.

Questions about security and fraud prevention

  • Everything is so uncertain. Is it still safe to keep my money at Meridian?

Yes. Your money is safe and Meridian is secure. As a regulated financial institution, deposits at Meridian are guaranteed up to $250,000 per separate deposit through the DICO (Deposit Insurance Corporation of Ontario). This coverage protects deposits in chequing and savings accounts, term deposits and guaranteed investment certificates (regardless of the term length), money orders, bank drafts, funds in transit and index-linked term deposits (principal portion only).

  • Is there an increased risk of fraud as a result of COVID-19?

The risk of frauds and scams is ever-present and fraudsters always take advantage of any opportunity, particularly when people are in a vulnerable state, like now. We have become aware of a number of new fraudulent schemes seeking to exploit the COVID-19 pandemic, including fraudulent websites asking for donations to support those impacted by the virus. Always verify a charity through a reputable source and conduct your own due diligence to make sure they are legitimate before you make a donation.

You can help protect yourself by being continuously mindful of phishing scams, protecting and limiting the sharing of your personal information, and taking protective measures such as having an up-to-date operating system and anti-malware software. • Is my money safe from fraud?

Meridian’s Fraud Management team is fully operational. We take the security of our Members very seriously and we have a robust fraud-monitoring program in place to protect Meridian and our Members.
