TORONTO (Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2016) – Meridian, Ontario’s largest credit union, is proud to name Burlington resident Kevin Han as the 2016 recipient of the Meridian Commitment to Communities Sean Jackson Scholarship.
"Kevin's academic achievements were impressive, but his leadership in the community, combined with his entrepreneurial mindset really exemplified the spirit of the scholarship," says Sarah Rea, Senior Manager, Corporate Social Responsibility at Meridian. "Kevin inspired us with his ability to identify needs and solve problems, his insight in developing environmental solutions to create social change, and his dedication to fostering financial literacy among his peers. He is truly deserving of this award."
An aspiring engineer, Kevin is an active leader in the Burlington community and was honoured with the City of Burlington's Junior Citizen of the Year Award in 2015. He is involved with Chill Zone, an after-school care program for children at risk, and spearheaded fundraising initiatives that raised over $50,000 to help fight pediatric cancer.
Winning the scholarship is amazing, but more so because I was recognized just for doing what I love to do," says Kevin. "I'm very interested in finding ways to make communities better places and working with others to adapt successful solutions in their neighbourhoods. This scholarship can help me reach my goal of obtaining my undergraduate degree in Engineering so I can continue to contribute to a healthier, more sustainable society."
The scholarship is named in honour of Meridian's first CEO and community leader, Sean Jackson. Every year, $10,000 is awarded to one Ontario student who has demonstrated a strong commitment to their community while achieving academic excellence.
The Meridian's Commitment to Communities Sean Jackson Scholarship is administered by the Niagara Community Foundation. Full details of the scholarship application can be found on Meridian's website at www.meridiancu.ca/community.
